RYA First Aid
This RYA First Aid course covers all the usual topics from a boating perspective. It is designed to give a working knowledge of First Aid to skippers and those using small craft.
If you are looking to get commercially endorsed, we will also be able to provide the additional Category C subsection.
The RYA Fisrt Aid course is recommended by the MCA and HSE fulfils the requirements for:
- professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters;
- the Senior First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF’s regulations on first aid training (OSR 4.08.4)
Course Content Includes
the recovery position in a confined space
CPR, including the drowning protocol
cold shock and hypothermia fromimmersion and/or exposure
seasickness and dehydration
medical assistance or advice by VHF
Delivered in classes of no more than 12 students to ensure individual instructor attention.
Students will be exposed to theoretical first aid, interspersed with time for practical, hands-on experience including recovery position, log roll and CPR, with adaptations to the on board environment where applicable.
A lot of attention will be given to cold shock and hypothermia with in-depth explanations to ensure the best understanding of this condition, its avoidance, recognition and management.
The course results in a certificate, valid for three years.
Ability After Course
Be able to gauge what sort of action needs to be taken, know how to perform CPR with drowning protocol and other First Aid techniques, be familiar with the procedures for evacuation by helicopter and radioing for medical advice.
