Transport Malta Nautical Licence

The Transport Malta Nautical Licence is required by Maltese citizens and foreign residents living on the island. It allows the holder to operate a vessel (powerboat, sailing vessel, or Jetski) with a combined horsepower of 30Hp or over and up to 24m in length in Maltese Territorial Waters only (12 Nautical Miles).


The course consists of both theory and practical components. We provide handouts for the course.
Our theory tuition is online.  The Location and Time for the practical session will be advised during the Course.
 
Examination
Following the successful completion of your course, the school will submit your application to Transport Malta for your oral exam (approx. 15 mins long). Transport Malta will provide us with an examination date which we will notify you by email.
 
Please bear in mind that when you are given an exam date and choose to postpone or reschedule, your exam fee is forfeited, and you will need to re-apply once again with Transport Malta.
 
Upon the successful completion of your exam from Transport Malta, you can present your stamped certificate the next day at Transport Malta offices Lija (https://news.transport.gov.mt/moorings-office-in-hal-lija/) along with two passport-sized photos and €23.29. You should receive your license at your preferred address. (within approx. two weeks.)     
 

Validity
Valid for power/sail-driven vessels of up to 24m (70ft), sailing boats, and jet skis within 12Nm. Not valid for commercial use. Renewed at Transport Malta every 10 years.

Course Location
Online via Google Meet – A calendar event will be sent to you prior to the scheduled session. This will contain a link to the video session.
Office: Malta Sailing Academy – Ta’ Qali – Our office is open from Monday to Friday (except on Public Holidays) from 09:45 – 13:30
Detailed joining instructions showing you how to join the Google Meet session will be sent to you closer to the start of the course.

· The  application form, filled in and signed      Nautical Licence Application

· A Medical Fitness Certificate to be filled in by your doctor  Certificate of Medical Fitness – NL Form

· A copy of the front and back of your ID card
